Baru pada 1984 dibuat suatu metode untuk mendistribusikan host name dan IP address ke dalam suatu database, sehingga tiap organisasi yang menangani internet hanya bertanggung jawab terhadap database yang berisi informasi jaringan miliknya saja.
Penggunaan DNS ini sangat membantu komputer dalam pencarian alamat pengguna suatu jaringan. Ini dapat dimisalkan dengan data barang digudang pada suatu supermarket yang berjumlah ribuan jenjis. Untuk mencari jenis data sebanyak itu, seorang pegawai gudang akan sulit mencari jenis barang yang berada di gudang jika seseorang menanyakannya. Untuk mempercepat pencarian, seorang yang bekerja digudang akan mengelompokkan jenis barang menjadi beberapa kode barang. Pemberian kode barang menjadi kode barang makanan, kebutuhan kantor, rumah tangga, dan lain-lain. Dari kertas tersebut dibagi lagi menjadi beberapa jenis, misalnya kertas A4, A5, Folio dan lain-lain. Begitu seterusnya, hingga mencapai kode barang yang lebih kecil dan terperinci sehingga kode tersebut tidak dapat dipecah lagi.
Beigtu pula dengan bagian akutansi, akan membagi kode akutansi menjadi beberapa kelompok, misalnya aktiva, hutang dan modal. Aktiva dibagi menjadi aktiva lancar dan aktiva tetap, aktiva tetap terbagi menjadi misalnya kendaraan dan akumulasi kendaraan, hutang terbagi menjadi hutang jangka pendek dan hutang jangka panjang dan modal terbagi menjadi modal pribadi dan modal saham. Begitu seterusnya, hingga mencapai kelompok terkecil dan terperinci.
Atau dapat pula dimisalkan dengan surat yang akan dikirim. Surat tersebut akan dikelompokkan menjadi negara wilayah atau propinsi, kecamatan, kelurahan, rukun warga (RW) sampai kelompok terkecil, yaitu rukun tetangga (RT).
Demikian halnya dengan DNS akan membagi beberapa jaringan menjadi beberapa kelompok jaringan yang lebih kecil, misalnya com (untuk komersial), edu (untuk pendidikan), go (untuk pemerintahan), org (untuk organisasi), mil (untuk militer), id (untuk wilayah Indonesia) dan lain-lain. Kelompok besar ini disebut kelompok yang lebih kecil, mislanya net (net.id), co(co.id), ac (ac.id) dan lain-lain. Kelompok ini disebut subdomain atau second level domain, karena kelompok ini merupakan bagian domain atau merupakan level keuda dari atas. Dari kelompok itu dibagi lagi menjadi kelompok kecil dibawahnya yagn disebut dengan third level domain. Begitu seterusnya hingga mencapai level terkecil yang menunju ke komputer atau host.
Pada level kedua domain atau second level domain untuk wilayah Indonesia atau wilayah negara lain dibagi menjadi beberapa aturan penamaan. penentuan ini disamakan dengan sistem Inggris, yaitu go.id. Untuk lembaga pemerintahan. co.id untuk lembaga konvensional. ac.id untuk akademik (sekolah atau kampus). net.id (untuk penyedia jasa network (provider) dan or.id untuk lembaga nonpemerintahan atau LSM.
Selain berfungsi memetakan nama host ke IP address. DNS juga befungsi untuk memetakan IP address ke domain name. Pemetaan ini dapat terlaksana karena DNS mempunyai fasilitas
reverse mapping.Tugas administrator jaringan untuk memutuskan pembuatan dari pembentukkan zona baru. Apabila akan membentuk zona baru, administrator akan menyediakan nama server pada zona tersebut. Semua nama dan IP address dari seluruh komputer akan masuk ke zona tersebut melalui nama server yang diberikan. Nama server inilah yang nantinya sebagai penghubung antara host yang satu dengan host yang lain dalam satu zona tersebut.
Tugas administrator sangat ditentukan dengan banyaknya komputer atau host yang dilayani oleh server. Jika komputer yang dilayani sedikit, seorang administrator akan ringan pekerjaannya. Namun jika komputer yang dilayani terlalu banyak, seorang administrator akan berat dalam pekerjaannya. Untuk mengatasi besarnya beban sebuah server, seorang administrator dapat membentuk zona baru disertai dengan pendelegasian domain.
